Carolyn Ambler Walter

Carolyn Ambler Walter, a woman of profound intellect, boundless compassion, and an adventurous spirit, passed away peacefully at her home in White Horse Village on May 5, 2026. She was 81. Her final year was marked by the same strength and perseverance that defined her life as she faced a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on January 29, 1945, in Churchville, PA, to the late Betty A. and J. Penrose Ambler, Carolyn’s journey began with deep roots in her community. After graduating from Council Rock High School, she attended Juniata College—a pivotal chapter during which she met her first husband, John Wallace Walter, and formed a circle of lifelong friends whose bonds would span over sixty years.

Carolyn and John settled in Swarthmore, PA to raise their family. This is also where Carolyn began a distinguished professional journey: a lifelong learner, she earned both a Master’s and a PhD in Social Work from nearby Bryn Mawr College.

She dedicated her professional life to the service of others and left an indelible mark on the field of social work. Whether as a Professor at the University of Maryland or during her instrumental years building the School of Social Work at Widener University, Carolyn’s greatest professional joy was mentoring the next generation of healers. Following the loss of her husband John after 26 years of marriage, she turned her personal grief into a gift for others, becoming a renowned expert, coach, and author on the subject. Her three books—The Timing of Motherhood, The Loss of a Life Partner, and Grief and Loss Across the Lifecycle—remain a testament to her empathy and her desire to guide others through their darkest hours.

Carolyn found love again with her second husband, Bruce Bryen. Together, they shared nearly 32 years of partnership, a love for living life, and exploration. Carolyn was a woman who truly lived. She was a constant presence in her book clubs, her professional groups, at the theater, in concert halls, at dinners out and singing with her choir.

While her passport was a well-worn chronicle of her curiosity, one of her most cherished places on earth remained the home she loved in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware—nestled perfectly between the serenity of the lake and the rhythm of the ocean.

Above all her accolades, Carolyn’s heart belonged to her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Bruce Bryen; her children, Kim Walter Remley (Steve) and Brian Wallace Walter (Cat McManus); and her cherished grandchildren, Matthew, Connor, Hazel, and Matilda, who were her pride and joy. She also leaves behind her brother, David Ambler (Donna); her stepchildren, Jeff Bryen and Wendy Conover (Rick); five step-grandchildren; and a community of colleagues and friends who were like family to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, John Wallace Walter.
