Dennis Thomas Harkins, 77, passed away after a brief hospitalization on Friday, December 12, 2025, surrounded by his family.
The son of the late George “Ned” and Anne (Lamb) Harkins, Dennis was born in Philadelphia, PA on August 26, 1948. He grew up the oldest of four children in Northeast Philadelphia and was a graduate of St. Timothy’s grade school, Father Judge High School, and the University of Scranton, making lifelong friends along the way.
Dennis spent the bulk of his career working for the United States Postal Service. He began at the Philadelphia airport’s mail processing center and retired in 2014 as the Postmaster of the Perkasie, PA post office. When his parents were alive, Dennis and his dad, himself a retired Postmaster, would often spend hours talking shop at the kitchen table at the family’s weekly Monday night dinners.
In his free time, Dennis loved nothing more than to play a round of golf and, when he was still working, could often be found on a course or a driving range on his days off. He frequently participated in charity outings, and in retirement, played weekly with childhood friend Frank Boyle and other good friends. Dennis also enjoyed taking road trips with his wife and daughter, trying new restaurants for their happy hour snacks, following current events, and sitting around the table with his family and friends sharing stories.
Dennis is survived by his loving partner of 42 years and wife, Irene Fitzgerald of Plymouth Meeting, PA; his beloved daughter Glenna Harkins of Cherry Hill, NJ, his dear sister, Julia Apice and brother-in-law Joe of Philadelphia; many nieces and nephews in the Apice, Fitzgerald, and Dunne families; as well as cherished cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, Dennis’ sisters, Victoria Brick and Carol Anne Harkins-Hallock and his brother-in-law Guy Hallock preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 10am, with a Funeral Mass at 11am at St. Katherine of Siena Parish in Northeast Philadelphia. There will be a luncheon to follow. Internment will be at a later date.
