Doris Jean Hemmert, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, cousin, aunt, and loyal friend passed away peacefully on November 16, 2023 at the age of 82. She was born on July 3, 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to George and Matilda Rinke. Doris is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Jack Hemmert and her two loving sons Jack (Dawn) and Todd (Katie). She was also Mom Mom to her five grandchildren whom she adored, Kylie, Keira, Wyatt, Khloe and Cody.
Doris was a kind, generous, and thoughtful person who touched so many lives. She was born and raised in the Kensington section of Philadelphia and grew up on Somerset Street with a tight-knit extended family. She was the proud daughter of her father George, a German immigrant and baker, and her mother Matilda “Tillie” who worked for a venetian blind shop. Growing up she loved to help her Dad work on cars and her Mom around their home, and she enjoyed being outdoors.
A proud graduate of Jules E. Mastbaum High School, following graduation Doris worked at Penn Mutual Insurance. She had a thirst for adventure and as a young woman traveled through Europe. She loved animals, especially her pet Dobermans and spent lots of time working with and training them. She met the love of her life Jack while attending a training class for her dog at the local YMCA. Before getting married and starting their family, Jack and Doris enjoyed spending time on their boat, affectionately called “the love boat” by her family to cruise and water ski. They married in 1971 and settled in Pennypack Woods where they raised their family. They shared a love of Lancaster County and built their own home in the country for a weekend getaway from the city. Doris worked hard to provide for her family. After raising her babies she went back to the workforce at Philadelphia Telco Credit Union where she worked in Payroll. In addition to Telco, Doris also catered and cleaned commercial offices. Her favorite work was done outside, maintaining her homes and her flower and vegetable gardens in Philadelphia and in the country. Doris was always on the go and willing to lend a helping hand to all who needed. She loved her shopping adventures with friends and her traditional all-nighters each black Friday with her family. Her love of travel continued and after retiring from the Credit Union, she enjoyed trips with her family to Disney and Destin, Florida and road trips to see all she could of the United States and the beautiful national parks along the way. Doris’ passion for her family and friends was immeasurable and she leaves behind a legacy of love and influence that will never be forgotten.
A funeral service and burial will be held on Thursday December 21, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Washington Crossing National Cemetery 830 Highland Rd. Newtown, PA followed by a celebration of life at Georgine’s at 1320 Newport Road Bristol, PA for all family and friends to attend at 12:15 p.m.
