Edward (“Edâ€) Michael Churchill, age 83, of Hatboro, PA, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2018 at Abington Hospital. Ed was born on November 28, 1935, in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Winston and Virginia (Kelly) Churchill. He graduated 6th in his class from Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School (the “Prepâ€) in 1953, and attended Drexel University in 1958 on a partial scholarship, where he earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering.
Ed is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Murray, and four children: Christopher Churchill (Edie-deceased); Caroline Churchill (Conrad Miller); Michael Churchill (Nancy) and Catherine Barcy (Jeff); two step-children: Peter Murray (Karen) and Marie Murray (Deborah Ward); and 11 grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother, Winston J. Churchill, Jr., his nephew, John Churchill and family. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary (Churchill) Miller.
Ed worked in civil engineering throughout his career, and was hired to manage the New Jersey Office of Urban Engineers in 1968. He later was appointed to serve as County Engineer for Bucks County, PA, managing approximately 300 employees. He left this position in 1972 to form JC Associates of Doylestown, which became Churchill & Associates of Doylestown. He also acquired a land surveying business in Ottsville, PA, which he named Upper Bucks Surveyors. In addition, he taught civil engineering courses at Somerset County Technical Institute in New Jersey.
In retirement, Ed pursued his life-long interest in American History, publishing a feature article in the Civil War Times Illustrated in 1998, and writing numerous other articles. He was a member of the Bucks County Civil War Roundtable. He loved the history and beauty of Bucks County, and was proud to have designed the road system for Washington’s Crossing Historic Park that is still used today.
In addition to his interest in historical research, teaching and writing, Ed travelled extensively throughout the world with his wife Catherine. He also loved the shore and spending summers with Catherine in Ocean City, NJ, enjoying sunsets on the Bay.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, 81 Swamp Road, Newtown, PA. Friends may call at the Church beginning at 10:00 a.m.
