Edward D. Hughes, Sr.

HUGHES, EDWARD D. Passed away on December 26, 2022 at the age of 83. Husband of the late Marie (nee Carboni). Father of Ed Jr (Cindy), Terri McCloskey (Bill), Ken (Bernadette), and the late Billy (Wendy). Grandfather of Tim McCloskey (Jaime), Jayne, Christopher, Kim, Shannon, Kelly, Erin, Madeline, Alex, Tyler, Sean, Danny, Liam. Great grandfather of Morgan, Abby and Dean. Son of the late Frank and Catherine (nee Gallagher). Brother of the late Frank Hughes and S. Marie Charlene I.H.M.

Ed graduated from Father Judge HS in 1957 where he played both Basketball and Baseball and is a member of the Father Judge Baseball Hall of Fame. After graduation, Ed headed to Johnson City, TN to begin a minor league stint with the Philadelphia Phillies.  He played from 1957-1961 in various cities across the country.  He married his high school sweetheart Marie in 1959. Ed eventually became a Philadelphia Police Officer where he served for 30 years. 

Throughout the 1980s while his children were attending Archbishop Ryan HS, Ed volunteered his services to the school by driving the team buses for games, tending the ‘sticks’ on the gridiron, grooming the baseball field, plowing snow as well as various other maintenance tasks. After retiring he worked for Givnish Funeral Home on Academy Rd and often drove the hearse in processions for fallen police officers.  Ed was able to spend his last Christmas at home surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Please join the Hughes family after 3:00pm on Saturday January 7, 2023 at Delaware Valley Cremation Center 7350 State Road Philadelphia, PA 19136 for a gathering of remembrance in honoring and celebrating Ed’s life. A service for Ed will begin at 4:00pm with time for refreshments and fellowship immediately afterwards, until 6:00pm where Ed's family will be accessible to receive the loving comfort of your condolences, remembrances and support.
