Edward Joseph Novotny, born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on July 22, 1933 to the late, Harry Charles Novotny and Helen M. Chemerys. Edward passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on January 1, 2024.
He was a loving husband to Diana Novotny (nee Newman) “His Bride”, as he referred to her for 44 years. He was a loving supportive father to his children: Edward Joseph Novotny II, Robert J. Novotny, and his bonus daughters, Joanne, Debbie, Louann, Lisa and their families. He will be missed dearly by his 14 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. Ed was predeceased by his sister and brother in law, John and Clair O'Brien.
Edward grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Roman Catholic high school in 1953, on an academic scholarship, before studying at Penn State. He proudly served in the US Army, in the Korean War. Ed loved learning, reading and competing with his bride at Jeopardy and Wheel of fortune. They enjoyed watching game shows, and loved going out for dinner together. He called this their “date nights”.
His greatest joy was spending time with Diana, family and friends, particularly at family events and holidays. They spent many enjoyable years at The Villages in Florida, where they loved playing cards, bowling, dancing and taking trips with friends. He enjoyed racquetball, was passionate about softball and his teammates, their tournaments and wins. Ed couldn’t wait until he turned 70, to join the 70+ league. He would play triple headers in 90° temperatures and was the runner for the old guys with bad knees.
Ed was Mom‘s “Knight in shining armor”, best friend and soulmate! Always a loving gentleman as mom says, “ Steady Eddie”, consistently a supportive kind gentle loving man who always had your back. His nurses all loved him, his kindness and sense of humor. He leaves behind a legacy of love.
You will forever be in our hearts Ole Blue Eyes!
