George William Schoedler, Jr., age 83, passed away on May 14, 2022 in Abington, PA. George was born on May 31, 1938 in Fort Monroe, VA. He was the son of George William Schoedler and Margaret (Gillon) Fisher, and husband of Mary Catherine (Smith) Schoedler, who have all preceded him in death. George is survived by his two siblings, Margaret McAuley of Hatboro, PA and John Schoedler of Huntingdon, PA (Bonnie Bruner), his son Michael William Schoedler of Jamison, PA (Judy Meme), his daughter Christine Schoedler Lavallie of Abington, PA (Shane Lavallie) and five grandchildren, Laura Kunzman (Kevin Kunzman), Steven Schoedler, Gillon Lavallie, Chase Lavallie, and Christian Lavallie.
Most people knew George as “Will”. Will grew up in Philadelphia in the neighborhood of Nicetown and attended Simon Gratz High School. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Army. After his discharge, he met and married his wife of 60 years, Mary. They lived for many years with their children in Fulmor Heights in Hatboro, PA, before buying their first home in Huntingdon Valley. During those busy years Will enjoyed annual hunting and fishing trips. He loved his German Shepherds, scotch, a good poker game and was an excellent billiards player. Will and Mary spent many years with friends and family in Ocean City, NJ where they owned two properties and enjoyed travelling, especially on cruise ships.
Will was a self-made man. In his twenties he became an auto mechanic and worked on Volkswagens at Harbison’s on The Fairway in Jenkintown. From there he went on to open his own auto repair shop. After years of getting his hands dirty, he traded the repair shop for gas stations. He enjoyed the daily routine and getting to know his customers. His dream was to retire early, and made that happen in 1994 at the age of 55 when he sold his Mobile station located on Rt 611 in Horsham.
Will took up the game of golf when he was 40 years old and it quickly became his favorite hobby. So much so that he convinced Mary to retire in Little River, SC, just outside of Myrtle Beach in 1998. He spent the next 20 years golfing several times a week while enjoying the wonderful community of River Hills Golf & Country Club. He and Mary embraced their new friends and lifestyle in South Carolina while still visiting loved ones in Pennsylvania.
In 2018, Will and Mary moved back to Pennsylvania to be closer to family. He received the devastating diagnosis of Stage 4 Small Cell Carcinoma in April, 2022. He and his family are very grateful for the care he received at Sunrise Senior Living and Holy Redeemer Hospice.
Will loved his family and friends and believed that he was one of the luckiest men around.
