James J. O’Connell

James J. O’Connell, a lifelong Germantown resident, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 27, 2020 at the age of 70 in his home.

Jim (Jimmy) was born on April 22nd 1949 at Germantown Hospital. He is survived by his daughter, Irene O’Connell, his siblings, Sally Ginty (Paul), Margaret Mathauser (Bob), Marianne Wright (Ron) and John O’Connell (Julie). Jim also had close relationships with his five nephews and seven nieces. Jim was the son of James J. O’Connell and Margaret (Margie) Maguire.

Family and close friends will continue to think of Jim with great love, treasuring so many wonderful memories. He was a devoted and adoring father for, as to Jimmy, the sun rose and set on his only daughter, Irene. Jimmy could be quite the prankster and many can instantly recall a time with him that brings laughter from made up stories and funny jokes. However, not all may know that he had quite a gift for writing poetry, he loved art and classical music, especially opera. Jim was also known for his incredible generosity, literally offering his shirt off of his back or last dollar to someone in need.

Jimmy’s Irish charm and sweet and persuasive personality were great assets in business adventures and his successes in sales. As a true Philadelphia native, Jim was a devoted local sports fan and enjoyed staying up late to listen and call into talk radio, once earning him the nickname “Jimmy from Germantown.”

Relatives and friends are invited to greet the O’Connell family Friday, March 6, 2020 from 10:00-10:45 am, immediately followed by mass at Saint Vincent de Paul Church, at 109 East Price St. Philadelphia, PA 19144. Interment will be Private.
