John G. Firn, a beloved resident of Fox Chase, Philadelphia, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on September 30, 1953, in Philadelphia, John was a man of faith and a pillar of his community, known for his unwavering kindness and readiness to lend a helping hand.
John was a devoted husband to his wife, Donna Vereb Firn, and a loving father to his three children: Stephanie Gallagher (Bob), John G. Firn Jr. (Mari Gabriel), and Matthew Firn Sr. He was also a proud grandfather to Matthew (Monk) Firn Jr., Delaney Ryan, and Bobby Gallagher. Family was the cornerstone of John's life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Predeceased by his parents, Helen Griffin Firn and George Firn, as well as his brother, James Cye Firn, John leaves behind his sister, Janice Marie Firn IHM, and his brothers, Joseph Firn and Eugene Firn. He was a dear friend to many, creating cherished memories that will be treasured by all who knew him.
John's commitment to serving his community was evident in all aspects of his life. A member of the Philadelphia Fire Department for 27 years, John worked his way up to the rank of Captain. He helped build the city’s Paramedic training system, shaping the careers of hundreds of medics. John was widely regarded as a class character, a sentiment echoed by the many lives he touched. His legacy of generosity and friendship will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral services will be held at St. Cecilia Church, 535 Rhawn St, Philadelphia, PA 19111, on Thursday, May 22, 2025. Visitation will be from 9:30 - 10:30am. Mass will be immediately following. Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating John's life and honoring his memory.
