It is with great sadness we announce that John W. Sharp peacefully passed away and into the next life on February 15, 2021 at his home in Philadelphia at the age of 99.
John was born on March 6, 1921 in Maryville, Tennessee and spent most of his life in Philadelphia. John graduated from Philadelphia’s Central High School. During World War II he served as a proud member of the US Army at several bases in Europe as part of their Transport Supply Group. When John returned to Philadelphia, after the war, he married his sweetheart, Evelyn Stockton and she predeceased him in July, 2010.
John worked for the US Postal service in a wide variety of carrier and management positions for many years and retired from that service several years ago when he began to work for the University of Pennsylvania Postal organization from whom he also retired.
John loved Philadelphia and he was an avid sports fan that always enjoyed his trips with family to Atlantic City where he liked spending time on the beach, in the sun, and at the casinos. He also enjoyed family trips to Martha’s Vineyard where he liked long walks and fun on the beach and in the water. John was a very gentle and intelligent man with a good mind even in his later years.
John was also a friend and always ready to help as a rock supporting many in his family and others with whom he came in contact.
John is survived and will be dearly missed by many in his loving family that includes, but is not limited to, his cousin and caregiver until the end Ms. Claudette Davis; his sister-in-law Ms. Mary Tindley; nieces Mrs. Antonia Gonzalez, Ms. Joyce Matthews, Ms. Marguerite Sewell, Ms. Nona Sharp, and Ms. Carmen Hopson; his nephew James Sharp; and niece Mrs. Lynn Heath, his Goddaughter Mrs. Karen Heath-Wade, and their children and other family members and friends.
