Joe Doyle of Philadelphia passed away from cancer on June 19, 2023. He was 73 years old.
Beloved husband of Sima (née Silverstein). Loving son of the late Joseph and Mary Doyle. Father of Joseph III, Alaina Tweddale (Brian), and Michele O’Hara (Thomas). He was Pop-pop of grandchildren Courtney, Toby, Ellie, and Ava. Loving brother of Mary, Dennis, and the late Patrick.
Joe attended La Salle College High School and then La Salle University, where he studied English literature. For 40+ years he quietly helped Philadelphians build better, more dignified lives though his career with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services.
Joe and his late brother Patrick played locally in the Philadelphia-based rock & roll band, “Swamp Water.” Joe was an avid fan of both classic rock and jazz. He loved singing on the public stage and for intimate family gatherings.
Joe was very well-read and enjoyed the classics – but his favorite genre was mystery – especially anything penned by the author Raymond Chandler. He had a deep appreciation for cinema; he was also an avid theater patron and long-standing member of Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theater.
Joe also had a deep love of and talent for all things trivia (but especially the tv game show Jeopardy!), playing Strat-O-Matic with his son and good friend Rich, and watching football and baseball from home with a cool drink in his hand.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joe’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society
