Lewis “Lew” Edward Ryan, Jr. passed away August 9th, 2024, after a long decline from a stroke in 2023. He is survived by his sons, Matthew and Sean, as well as his sister, Mary Ryan Chappell, and grandson Henry. He was predeceased by his parents, Lewis E. Sr & Elizabeth M. Ryan, his wife Janet née Emig, and his former wife Sharon neé Bones. He resided at White Horse Village in Newtown Square, PA, where he was a beloved resident known for socializing, walking dogs, and riding his electric bike.
Lew grew up in Narberth, PA, attended St. Margaret’s & Lower Merion High School, and was well known in the community for his outgoing nature. He spent his career in the transportation industry having the longest tenure at Allan A. Myers construction where he worked for over 30 years. Lew’s friendly nature earned him the nickname “Smiley” which carried with him throughout his career.
He was an avid cyclist throughout his life, having started biking in his 40s and continuing into retirement. In addition to exploring on his bike, Lew remained curious about the natural world and enjoyed hobbies in photography, astronomy, and gardening.
Lew was a lover of all animals, having had cats and dogs all his life. Anyone interested in commemorating Lew’s life and passions is encouraged to donate to Providence Animal Shelter in Media, PA, to support their mission of helping animals.
A celebration of his life will be held at White Dog Café, 379 Lancaster Ave, Haverford, PA, on September 14th from 2-4:30 PM.
