Lorraine Alexander passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024. Predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Benjamin Alexander Jr., Lorraine was a prolific collage artist who worked with handmade papers collected from around the world. She was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Barnes Foundation, and many other Philadelphia art institutions. As an artist, Lorraine held one-person shows with the Gross McCleaf Gallery, was a founding member of ArtForms cooperative of Manayunk, and was president of Cheltenham Center for the Arts. In addition, she took part in juried and invited shows at over a dozen galleries. Lorraine was an avid sports fan, and also loved and was actively involved with many of Philadelphia’s cultural organizations.

Lorraine had six children; Patricia Laub Tieger, Julie Alexander Steinberg (Robert), Richard Alexander (Janet), Michael Laub-deceased, John Laub-deceased, and Lizbeth Alexander Brunswick-deceased. She is also survived by her grandchildren Lindsey Laub Blatt, Allison Laub Hoffman, Peter Laub, Ben Alexander, Bradley Alexander, Steven Steinberg, Tobias Tieger, and Samantha Alexander Montanez, as well as thirteen great-grandchildren. Donations can be made in Lorraine’s memory to VIEW of Old Forge, NY, Woodmere Art Museum of Philadelphia, PA, and the Barnes Foundation of Philadelphia, PA. Information on a memorial will be forthcoming.

As Lorraine would say, “Every day is a miracle”.
