Matthew M. Zysk

Matthew M. Zysk, 73, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on April 6, 2026, following a long illness.

He was the beloved husband of Helen Lord Zysk (née Zikul), and father to Kimberly Connor (Matthew), Heather Steiner (Glenn), Matthew Zysk (Kelly), and Kasmir Zysk. He was preceded in death by his son, Jarret Lord (Patti).

Matthew was a proud grandfather, affectionately known as “Jaju,” to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kayla, Shane, Matthew, Christian, Steven, Kyle, Karissa, Jarret, Evan, Olivia, Molly, Ayden, Leah, Sophia, Kherington, and great-grandchildren Kylie, Matthew, Mason, Macklin, and Jaxon.

He will be missed by his sisters, Maryann Szczypiorski, Marlene Finn, and Victoria Kilcoyne, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Born and raised in the Feltonville section of Philadelphia, the late son of Matthew and Florence Zysk (nee Wycziekievicz). He became something of a local legend as the proprietor and bartender of the storied Matt’s Bar on Wyoming Avenue.

Matt wore many hats. He honorably served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1974. Over the years he worked as a roofer, exterminator, and contractor. He possessed a naturally curious mind and was always eager to learn and pick up new skills.

He created countless cherished memories playing softball with the Strappers and enjoyed many adventures and beach trips with his wife Helen. He formed lifelong friendships along the way.

Matt was a true character, a jack of all trades, but above all, a storyteller. He was known for his unique sense of humor and his love of a good tall tale, often leaving it up to the listener to decide where truth ended and imagination began. His stories, laughter, and presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Please join the Zysk family on Monday, April 20, 2026 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Delaware Valley Cremation Center, 7350 State Road, Philadelphia, PA 19136, for a gathering of remembrance in honoring and celebrating Matt's life. A service for him will begin at 7:00 pm, followed by time for refreshments and food, until 9:00pm. The Zysk family will be present to receive condolences, share memories, and celebrate Matt’s life throughout the evening.
