Rita M. Salzmann

Rita M. Salzmann, 71, passed away June 28, 2025, at Cambridge Rehab and Nursing. She was born November 3, 1953, in Philadelphia, the daughter of John J. and Mary (McKeefry) Salzmann.

Rita grew up in the Northwood neighborhood of Northeast Philadelphia with our parents and our Nana. It was a pretty tree lined street neighborhood, but to us girls it was our playground. We played basketball, roller skating, and even just laying out in the sun.

Rita attended St. Martin of Tours grade school and Little Flower High School, class of 1971. After the hurricane of 1962, our parents bought a house in Sea Isle. The storm made that property a beach front home and the whole family spent months after months, cleaning up all the debris the storm left behind. But it was well worth it and we enjoyed the house through the 60's and 70's.

When we no longer had the house in Sea Isle, Rita and Mary took our parents to Avalon every now and then. They all enjoyed fishing on the beach or bay. Rumor has it that there may have been some liquid refreshments, possible some beer or Manhattans. However, this has never been confirmed. Rita also enjoyed spending time visiting Eileen's family at their summer place in Wildwood.

We have a picture of Rita taken in 1976. She is standing with one hand on her hip and staring straight ahead, as if daring you to take the picture. Our sister, Anne captioned the picture, "Tough Stuff." Rita proved that name to be true when at the age of 40, she enrolled in night school at Rosemont College and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Science, and also graduated Magna Cum Laude.

We are all so sad that we lost Rita, and her favorite saying was "Rules are meant to be broken." I wonder what rules she'll get to break in heaven?

Rita we Love you and we will miss you, until we meet again.

Rita is survived by her sister, Susan Salzmann Zacniewski and her cousin, Reverend George S. Salzmann, OSFS; brother-in-law, Raymond Canning, nephew, Brian Christopher Canning and his wife Jennifer, great nephew, Jackson Hunter Canning and great nieces, Emilie Anne Canning and Hannah Bickert.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Mary and Joan Salzmann and Anne Salzmann Canning and her great niece, Mary Jo Mroz. She was also predeceased by her much loved friend, Eileen Marie Flynn.
