Sebastian, mainly known as “Tony,” and also lovingly called “Sonny” and “Asty,” Apicello, 95, passed away on July 14, 2026, at Nazareth Hospital.
Born in Jamaica, New York, to the late, Venturo and Teresa (Petty) Apicello, Tony’s life was a true example of hard work, generosity, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. At just 12 years old, he left school after the sixth grade to help support his family by selling blocks of ice for five cents each. By age 14, he had learned to drive a truck while working in a junkyard, where he also developed a talent for repairing cars. In his twenties, he began working in concrete and construction. After gaining experience with a business partner, he proudly built his own successful concrete business through determination, skill, and an unmatched work ethic.
Tony was the beloved husband and best friend of Virginia (Ziemak) Apicello. Together they shared nearly 67 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on love, family, and unwavering commitment. After they married, they made their home in South Floral Park, New York, before moving in 2002 to live with their daughter Mary and her family in Levittown, PA.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; his children, Anthony and Mary (ex-son-in-law Jim); his cherished grandchildren, Nick (Cora) and Paulina (boyfriend Jeffrey); and his sister, Theresa. He was predeceased by his parents, Venturo and Teresa; his siblings Ninny (Frank), Benny (Julie), Clemmy (Sal), and Josephine (Angelo); and his brother-in-law, Larry.
He was a devoted father to Anthony and Mary. He was his daughter’s hero, and she was always a daddy’s girl, even at 61 years old, always valuing his opinions and cherishing the time she spent with him. There was no greater joy in his life than being “Grandpa.” He absolutely adored his grandchildren, Nick (Cora) and Paulina, who were truly the center of his world. Nothing made him happier than watching them grow up together, filling his home with laughter, taking them on trips to Nathan’s and Seaside Heights, and creating memories they will cherish forever. His love for them was unconditional, constant, and evident in everything he did. They brought him endless pride and happiness, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Tony was a man who could always be counted on. He was an incredible brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend who would gladly give you the shirt off his back. If someone needed help, he was there without hesitation. His generosity, honesty, reliability, and kind heart touched countless lives. He enjoyed his nieces and nephews, who looked up to him, especially Bobby, and was known throughout the neighborhood for treating the local kids to Mr. Softee ice cream, simply because it made them smile.
Quick-witted with a wonderful sense of humor - qualities proudly inherited by his daughter Mary - Tony loved sharing laughs, going out to dinner with family, and making those around him feel welcome. In his later years, one of his closest companions was the family’s beloved dog, Buddy, whose friendship brought him great comfort and joy.
Tony’s legacy is one of love, sacrifice, kindness, laughter, and a lifetime of putting others before himself. He leaves behind a family who adored him, countless memories that will be treasured forever, and an example of what it means to live with integrity, generosity, and an open heart. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
