Shirley Dorsey

Shirley Mae Dorsey (Tootsie) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 9, 1939 to Harry and Edith Lewis. Shirley was the oldest of six siblings. Her education journey started at Morton McMichael Elementary School and ended at Simon Gratz High School where she graduated in the top part of her class. Upon graduation, Shirley began her working career at Joseph H. Cohen and Sons where she worked until her retirement in 1987.  It was during this time she met and married James B. Dorsey. Shirley loved to entertain and enjoy fun nights out on the town. Known as a fabulous dresser who commanded the room whether it was a blue light in the basement house party or one of the top clubs in Philadelphia, on the dance floor or at the table, she stood out in any crowd. Her love of travel and shopping was second to none, and she was truly the matriarch of the Lewis family.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memories, her sons, Penton R. Lewis & Charles J. Lewis; daughter-in-law Cynthia Pygatt Lewis; sisters Edith Short and Patricia Lewis; brother Penton C. Lewis; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Edith Lewis, brother Harry Lewis, and sister Florence Lewis Givens.

Her eternal message she leaves us with: “May the storms in your life be gentle showers, and the love of God shine brightly on your path. “

Acknowledgments - The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to their relatives and many friends for all acts of kindness extended during the passing of their loved one.
