With profound love and cherished memories, the family of Thomas John Hasson announces his peaceful passing on May 29, 2025, at the age of 93.
Born on March 25, 1932, in South Philadelphia to Leo and Martha (née Glasgow) Hasson, Tom was raised in a home grounded in faith, family, and service. He was preceded in death by his beloved siblings, Leo and Catherine, whose memories and the strength of their early bond remained with him throughout his life.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Tom served honorably during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, stationed aboard the U.S.S. Haynesworth. His military service shaped his unwavering sense of duty and commitment to others—values that guided him throughout his life.
After returning home, Tom married Nancy (née Wilson), and together they raised a beautiful family. They shared 64 years of love, partnership, and mutual support until Nancy’s passing in 2019. Tom was the proud father of six children: Cheryl May (preceded James), Elaine Faro (Thomas), Michael Hasson, Barbara Kramer (preceded Michael), Susan Heasley (William), and Christine Vogenitz.
A deeply devoted family man, Tom was affectionately known as Pop Pop to his grandchildren and Popadoodle to his great-grandchildren, names that captured his playful and loving spirit. He is survived by his six children, grandchildren: Jack, Scott, Elaine, Kimberly, Michael, Thomas, Matthew, Edward (predeceased), Joseph, William, Brian, Patrick, Jessica, and Sean, as well as his great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. His love and guidance will live on through the generations he leaves behind.
In 2022, Tom was blessed to find love again with Diane (née Gallagher), whose companionship brought comfort and joy in his later years. Together, Diane and Tom shared many cherished moments, and her care, kindness, and support were a great source of peace to him. His children are deeply grateful for the love and devotion Diane showed during their time together. One of the greatest joys of Tom’s final years was his loyal companion, Hammy. The bond they shared brought comfort, laughter, and unconditional love, and Hammy’s presence was a source of solace to Tom in his later life.
Tom dedicated his career to public service, joining the Philadelphia Police Department on November 19, 1956, as part of Class 131. His journey began at the 19th District before moving to the 6th District. In 1962, he was promoted to Detective in the Central Detective Division, and over the years, his commitment to justice led to promotions to Sergeant in 1967 and Lieutenant in 1976, where he served in the South Detective Division. Tom also shared his expertise at the Police Academy, Northeast Detectives, and the Counseling Unit. After 37 years of distinguished service, he retired on September 30, 1993.
Beyond his career, Tom was a man of incredible resilience, having celebrated 68 years of sobriety. His personal journey and dedication to helping others find their path to recovery were a testament to his strength and generosity of spirit. He devoted countless hours to guiding others through their struggles, offering encouragement, and helping them rebuild their lives.
Tom was known for his sense of humor, love of music, and endless energy. Whether telling stories, singing his favorite songs, or simply sharing a laugh, he brightened every room he entered.
Tom will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, strong faith, deep love for his family, and lifelong commitment to serving his community. His legacy of love, laughter, music, and selflessness will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
A private service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s memory to the Livengrin Patient Scholarship Fund, 4833 Hulmeville Road, Bensalem, PA 19020, or online at Livengrin Foundation Donations, to honor his 68 years of sobriety and his dedication to helping others on their path to recovery.
