Initially holding successive jobs, Thomas was employed at Novartis at its Ovaltine facility in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota for over 20 years until the facility was moved to Mexico during the second Bush administration. At that time, Thomas took retirement, but continued to work at several part time jobs.
