Initially holding successive jobs, Thomas was employed at Novartis at its Ovaltine facility in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota for over 20 years until the facility was moved to Mexico during the second Bush administration. At that time, Thomas took retirement, but continued to work at several part time jobs.

Thomas was hospitalized on September 7, 2022 at Allina Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids where it was discovered that he had lung cancer which had metastasized to his brain. In December, his sister and nephew returned Tom home to Pennsylvania to be amongst family.
