William Joseph Discavage, Jr.

William Joseph Discavage, Jr., affectionately known as "Bill," passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, at the age of 91, holding the hand of his devoted wife, Sara. In his final hours, they shared one last lively conversation about his beloved hometown of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania—a fitting farewell for a man who never forgot where he came from.

Bill was born on January 1, 1935, to William and Mary Discavage in the coal-mining town of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. In true Bill fashion, one of his favorite family stories was discovering at age 65—when applying for Social Security—that he had actually been born on New Year's Day. His mother had always celebrated his birthday on January 5 because she wanted him to have a special day all his own.

After graduating from Shenandoah Catholic High School, Bill ventured to the "big city" of Philadelphia to pursue a career in nurse anesthesia. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Hospital and St. Agnes Medical Center School of Anesthesia in 1958 and later earned a Master's Degree in Education from Temple University.

Bill began his career as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at Nazareth Hospital in 1958. In 1984, he succeeded the founder of Nazareth Hospital's School of Nurse Anesthesia, becoming the visionary leader who shaped its future. Through his leadership, innovation, and commitment to excellence, the program flourished for decades.

Recognizing the evolving needs of healthcare education, Bill helped establish one of the nation's first partnerships between a nurse anesthesia program and an academic institution, St. Joseph's University, allowing graduates to earn a master's degree in anesthesia. He also forged collaborative partnerships with Montgomery, Lankenau, and Pennsylvania Hospitals, creating a regional approach to nurse anesthesia education that benefited students and patients alike.

In 1996, Nazareth Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia celebrated its 40th anniversary during the National American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) Convention—a testament to the enduring program Bill helped build. His influence reached far beyond the classroom. Countless CRNAs throughout the Philadelphia region remember him as one of the most dedicated educators, mentors, and advocates they ever encountered. His legacy continues each day through the professionals he trained and inspired.

While Bill's professional accomplishments were extraordinary, his greatest joy came from his family. He treasured time spent with Sara, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, creating lifelong memories together. Summer vacations at the Jersey Shore became cherished family traditions, and he and Sara shared a passion for exploring the world, traveling to Hawaii, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, France, England, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and many other destinations.

Bill also had a gift for offering simple yet profound life advice. One lesson his family will never forget was: "Even if you've come home from a grueling day and you're exhausted, first ask your spouse about their day—and then say the three most important words: 'Tell me more.'" Those words reflected the kindness, attentiveness, and deep love that defined the way Bill lived.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 69 years, Sara; his sister, Helen Ann Mikita: his children, Mary Ellen Cockerham (Keith), Sharon Marino (Eugene), William J. Discavage III, and the late Carol Higgins (Robert); his 12 grandchildren: Kate (Daniel), Andrew, Kevin (Olivia), Paul (Allison), Alex (Ana), Christopher, Daniel, Will, Michael, Sara (Josh), Emily, and Julie (Bryan); and his 11 great-grandchildren: Henry, Ellis, Julian, Rosalie, Jackson, Matthew, Filip, Oliver, Bradley, Mark, and Shannon.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Bill's life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at St. Andrew's Church, 81 Swamp Road, Newtown, Pennsylvania. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 am, followed immediately by a Funeral Mass.
